What is an Orangery Used For?
The potential uses for orangeries are diverse, catering to various purposes. Many of our customers utilise them as social spaces, elegant dining areas, or even playful playrooms for children.
For homeowners aiming to give their home a comprehensive makeover, transforming the orangery into a stunning kitchen area is an excellent option. This conversion not only adds extra space but also imparts a sense of openness and spaciousness to the rest of the house.

Orangery Roof Options
Choose from various roof options for your new orangery extension, such as full glass, flat roofs, roof lanterns, and tiled roofs. A glass lantern roof is a smaller, vaulted glass roof nestled within a larger flat roof. This design forms a ceiling perimeter known as a ‘pelmet,’ often adorned with spot lighting, allowing the orangery to be utilised both day and night with ample natural light.
Throughout our years in the trade, we’ve installed and replaced hundreds of orangeries, conservatory roofs, conservatories, roofline, and porches of all shapes and sizes to homes across the East Midlands so you know you’re in safe hands. Contact us for a free consultation today!
FAQs about Conservatories & Orangeries Leicester
How does an orangery differ from a conservatory?
An orangery differs from a conservatory in its construction: orangeries have solid brick walls, while conservatories are mostly glazed. Orangeries offer a blend of extension and conservatory features, providing a more versatile living space.
What is a Pelmet?
A pelmet roof is an architectural feature in orangeries or conservatories. It is a stylish interior ceiling trim that runs along the perimeter of the roof, often accommodating spot lighting for added ambiance.
Are orangeries cheaper than extensions?
The cost of orangeries and extensions can vary depending on the design and specifications. In general, orangeries tend to be more cost-effective compared to traditional extensions.
Is an orangery cheaper than a conservatory?
While an orangery may come with a higher price tag than a conservatory, it proves to be a fantastic investment for any home. Not only does it enhance the property’s value, but it also floods the interior with natural light and provides an additional downstairs room.
Do you need planning permission for an orangery?
An Orangery is treated as a single-story extension and is subject to the same planning permission guidelines and building regulations as any other extension. You don’t need to obtain separate planning permission for an orangery if it’s built within the permitted development rights and follow the guidelines for what is considered acceptable. Our team at Phair Windows can help you with these guidelines and any planning permission that’s required.

Professional, skilled, great communication from the on-site team - honestly, the best workmen I’ve ever had. They left the place tidy and neat. Thanks guys! They did a great job on a dreary, winter’s day with a smile. I love the new porch, which was a decent price. Honestly though, the sales guy Tom and the crew of Cal, Jake and Aaron were great. After having had a bad experience before with a different company, I’ll be using Phair Windows to replace my windows in the near future as well.

EXCELLENT Based on 173 reviews Posted on Stephen HollowayJanuary 6, 2026. We had two new doors fitted yesterday by Lincoln and Mick, lovely lads, very professional, answered all my questions, left no mess, I will use this company again.Posted on Kate BristowDecember 20, 2025. Excellent prices, excellent window fitters and nothing was too much trouble. Left all clean and tidy. Thoroughly recommendPosted on Deborah GowersNovember 28, 2025. Excellent service from Phair. I had several damaged and misted double glazing panels replaced. Michael, Lincoln and Jason did a great job, friendly and professional, left the area clean and tidy. Also measured up for a roof panel replacement with very difficult access. I would definitely recommend and use again.Posted on Jazzy BainsNovember 24, 2025. Phair Windows and where do I start… I’ve experienced Windows sales people who come over and show you a sample window out from their boot. Show how thermally efficient it is. I’ve had Safe Style, Anglian and Everest visit my old house and new. (These companies are now under one roof). They sell you the dream. Try to make you sign up on the spot by calling their Manager. From experience the windows could be the best ever but it’s the way the fitters fit them is what makes them efficient. Now enough of the waffle…. I looked up Phair Windows via Google reviews. Tom came and visited and he was straight to the point. Told me the price and no dramatic sales pitch. Suggested that we have a hole cut out in the living room and have a window fitted. This was because the window we had was awkwardly positioned in the living room. So instead of bricking up and centralising the window we could have ‘twin’ windows side by side . He sold me the dream and gave him the deposit. I have to admit I was worried as I had given the deposit and what the end product would look like. I made a visit to their show room and they seemed legitimate enough. I only come across this company via Google reviews and had no friends or family that actually had any dealings with them. One of their surveyors, Jake came around and checked if everything was ok and suggested a few tweaks. Another friendly chap. We worked together via email on some window designs and how they would end up looking. Fast forward 8 weeks or so and the fitters came promptly on the scheduled date of install. I got to be honest I wasn’t holding my breath because of my past experiences with Safe Style. They came, they fitted and went. There was a slight technicality with the builder they employed to make the cut out in the living room. This was due to the heavy rain and even though I was not happy but I suppose that was out of anyone’s control. Jake came along on the day to apologise for the builder not doing the job on the set date and honoured me the duraboards for the window sills free of charge for the inconvenience caused. When the builder eventually came he cut out the wall and matched the arched brick work against the other window to perfection. He screwed on the window to the brickwork but was slightly protruding out but barely noticeable. This was because there was only one layer of brick and looks like he couldn’t go further back to match the other window. After his job was done the lads came back to complete the window and fit the new sill. As the window was slightly set back from the living room the cill did not look aesthetically pleasing. Without hesitation they went back to their depo and brought back a wider cill which fitted perfectly all within an hour. All these obstacles was probably due to having a window cut out but these lads overcame them all and acted professionally and kept me in the loop throughout the installation process. They are window fitters and not builders and have done an astounding job. They are a true credit to the company. It’s a shame I don’t recall all their names but hand on heart they were all pleasant gentleman who worked as it was their own home. I did have reservations from the very start of employing a window company that I never heard of but they made me feel reassured throughout the window installation process. I can 101% recommend this company and will approach them in the future when I need windows fitting for a future extension. Great job Phair Windows ❤️Posted on James RileyNovember 18, 2025.
